Director of Engineering

Summary of Functions

The Director of Engineering’s mission within Cortex is to lead the engineering team in creating working functional prototypes and production designs that meet client needs and deliver on the human experience set by the design team. The Director of Engineering is responsible for establishing and maintaining best-in-class working procedures to fulfill that role. This position is both operational, and also provides leadership to the operational staff (designers, engineers, sales people), operational knowledge to the President, and is proactive in performing the roles required to increase the operational excellence of Cortex. This is a leadership role with a high degree of responsibility, and is a position of accountability for the financial well-being and customer satisfaction for the company.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as liaison between customers and engineering team and designers and the engineering team
  • Demonstrate leadership in mechanical engineering responsibilities related to product design, including critical thinking, exceptional Solidworks surfacing, large-assembly modeling, and design for manufacturability
  • Detailing and drawing creation for rapid prototyping methods including Polyjet, FDM, CNC
  • Prototyping and production design verification
  • Supporting the creation of production ready CAD and manufacturing drawings for manufacturing processes including injection molding, die-casting, CNC milling, extrusions
  • Supporting and participating with the staff in best practices for new product development; user research, ethnography, sketching, prototyping, 3D CAD modeling, 3D CAD detailing for production methods, 2D engineering drawing to support production
  • Detailing products with electronic components
  • Help interns and other designers improve their skills and modeling expertise
  • Take care of client and vendor relationships
  • Manage and document your projects according to best practices
  • Keep accurate records of time spent on projects
  • Help maintain a clean and tidy office, perform light assembly work, maintain tools and equipment, or any other roles that may be requested as a natural part of conducting business in a small office
  • Assist in the creation of formal quotes and Product Requirements Documents
  • Increase knowledge of quality & safety standards and systems; ISO13485, ISO9001, UL, CSA, FCC, CE
  • Be pro-active in identifying and improving problems or inefficiencies in our practice
  • Play an active role in helping to define company strategy to maximize company profitability and employee satisfaction
  • Be a voice for other staff members to communicate feedback to the management team
  • Be a voice for the management team and help define and enforce company policies to ensure employee compliance
  • Occasionally assist in book-keeping tasks like issuing purchase orders, tracking invoices, or assessing shipping status
  • Be entrepreneurial in your approach to helping Cortex as a business
  • Help to promote our work and our practice as you would your own
  • Actively seek and bring to our attention any potential customers or contract opportunities that we might fulfill

Core Competencies

Minimum Competencies

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an accredited engineering program
  • 2+ years prior management experience directing and coaching the work of other staff
  • 5+ years mechanical engineering design experience of consumer-facing electromechanical products
  • 10+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience
  • Hands-on experience with high-volume manufacturing techniques (SMT, injection molding, die-casting, extrusions)
  • Solidworks advanced assembly and surfacing knowledge

Preferred Competencies

  • Project management experience
  • Knowledge of quality & safety standards and systems; ISO13485, ISO9001, UL, CSA, FCC, CE
  • Freehand sketching capabilities (either digital or traditional tools)
  • Adobe CS Suite
  • Fusion 360 or other cloud-based CAD packages

Organizational Relationships

  • Reports to the CEO/President
  • works directly with the other Department Directors and Managers
  • Mechanical Engineering Department staff report directly to this position
