Design Researcher

Summary of Functions

The design researcher’s mission within Cortex is to lead research, ethnography, and stakeholder interviews and translate key insights into actionable project insights. The design researcher will also contribute to technical validation, regulatory investigation and manufacturing planning that will help successfully guide the development of consumer and medical tech products.

Your main duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Collaborate with design, engineering and regulatory teams to understand project goals and requirements to help guide successful user experiences
  • Contribute to product design through rigorous human-centered exploration and analysis
  • Identify the best research methods to deliver the insights needed to inform user experience design, product strategy and implementation, based on project requirements, timelines, and resources
  • Collect, analyze, visualize, and prepare research findings for presentation to internal teams and stakeholders
  • Make design recommendations that balance user experience, stakeholder needs, and business strategy
  • Prepare client-facing deliverables that summarize key insights, technical validation, regulatory analysis and design recommendations that form the basis of a product roadmap: BaseCamp by Cortex

You should also possess the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Factors, Psychology, User Experience Research, Design Strategy, Industrial Design, Social Sciences, or equivalent field
  • 1-5 years relevant work experience, including integrating user research into physical product design, experience strategy, service design and design practices
  • Demonstrated expertise and comfort with a mix of experience design methods including interviews, ethnographic reports, review of technical and research data and other forms of observational research
  • Understanding and experience applying inclusive design principles, methods and standards in research
  • Experience working with both technical teams (industrial design, design engineering and embedded systems) and directly with clients on design projects
  • Excellent written, verbal and clear visual communication skills

  • Experience with medical regulatory requirements
  • Experience operating within an ISO:13485 environment
  • Graphic design experience
  • Knowledge of common manufacturing methods
  • Experience with product costing (BOMs, CoGs)
  • UI/UX design experience
  • Industrial design experience
  • Knowledge of software trends
  • Experience using Google Workspace
